 Homemade Tomato Powder Recipe

Ingredients:

Ripe tomatoes — any variety (start with 1–2 kg)

(Optional) Salt — ½ teaspoon (for flavor)

(Optional) Citric acid or lemon juice — a few drops (for preservation and color)

🧑‍🍳 Method:

1. Wash and Prepare Tomatoes

Wash tomatoes thoroughly to remove dirt or pesticides.

Remove stems and any bruised or damaged parts.

Slice thinly (about ¼ inch thick) — thinner slices dry faster and more evenly.

2. Dry the Tomatoes

You can sun-dry, oven-dry, or use a dehydrator.

Option A: Sun Drying

Lay tomato slices on a clean mesh tray or cloth.

Cover with a thin net or muslin to keep insects away.

Dry in full sun for 2–3 days, turning occasionally, until crisp and brittle.

Option B: Oven Drying

Arrange slices on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

Set oven to 60–70°C (140–160°F).

Keep oven door slightly open to allow moisture to escape.

Dry for 6–10 hours, turning slices occasionally until completely dry.

Option C: Food Dehydrator

Place slices in a single layer on dehydrator trays.

Dry at 60°C (140°F) for 8–12 hours, until crisp.

👉 Tip: Tomatoes must be completely dry and crisp. Any remaining moisture can cause mold later.

3. Grind into Powder

Once fully dried, let them cool to room temperature.

Use a blender, spice grinder, or coffee grinder to grind into a fine powder.

Sift to remove large pieces if you prefer a smooth texture.

4. Store Properly

Store tomato powder in airtight glass jars or sealed containers.

Keep in a cool, dry, and dark place.

Shelf life: Up to 6 months (longer if vacuum-sealed or refrigerated).

🌶️ Optional Variations:

Spiced Tomato Powder: Add garlic powder, chili flakes, or dried herbs before grinding.

Instant Tomato Paste: Mix 1 tablespoon powder with 2 tablespoons warm water.
