Pad Thai Recipe: A Classic Thai Stir-Fry Delight
Pad Thai is Thailand’s most iconic noodle dish—an irresistible combination of sweet, salty, tangy, and umami flavors stir-fried to perfection. Known for its vibrant ingredients and street-food appeal, Pad Thai is a satisfying meal that’s both flavorful and balanced. Here's how to make a classic version at home with ease.
Ingredients
For the Sauce:
3 tablespoons tamarind paste
3 tablespoons fish sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 tablespoons palm sugar (or brown sugar)
1 teaspoon chili flakes (optional, for spice)
For the Stir-Fry:
200g flat rice noodles (soaked in warm water until soft)
200g shrimp or chicken breast (sliced thin)
2 eggs
1 cup bean sprouts
1/2 cup firm tofu (cubed and lightly fried)
3 garlic cloves (minced)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 cup crushed roasted peanuts
2 tablespoons chopped spring onions
Lime wedges, for garnish
Instructions
Prepare the Sauce:
In a bowl, mix tamarind paste, fish sauce, soy sauce, palm sugar, and chili flakes. Stir until sugar dissolves. This sauce is the soul of Pad Thai, balancing sourness from tamarind, saltiness from fish sauce, and sweetness from sugar.
Cook the Protein:
Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a wok or large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add shrimp or chicken slices and stir-fry until just cooked through. Remove from pan and set aside.
Sauté Aromatics:
Add remaining oil and sauté minced garlic until fragrant (about 30 seconds). Toss in the tofu and stir for a minute until lightly golden.
Add Eggs:
Push tofu to one side of the pan and crack in the eggs. Scramble gently, then mix with tofu and garlic.
Add Noodles and Sauce:
Drain the softened rice noodles and add them to the pan. Pour the prepared sauce over the noodles. Use tongs to toss everything together, ensuring the noodles absorb all the sauce and become glossy.
Final Touches:
Return the cooked shrimp or chicken to the pan. Add bean sprouts and half of the crushed peanuts. Toss briefly to combine and warm through.
Serve:
Dish out onto plates. Sprinkle with remaining peanuts and chopped spring onions. Serve with lime wedges on the side for an extra zing.
Tips & Variations
For vegetarian Pad Thai, replace fish sauce with soy sauce and use mushrooms or more tofu.
Add vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, or snap peas for more texture.
Adjust sweetness or sourness by modifying sugar and tamarind paste to your taste.
Conclusion
Pad Thai is a flavorful, quick, and customizable meal perfect for weeknight dinners or impressing guests. With the right balance of ingredients and sauce, this beloved Thai street food can be easily recreated at home, delivering an authentic taste of Thailand in every bite.
