 Dinner Rolls Recipe

Dinner rolls are soft, fluffy bread rolls that make the perfect accompaniment to almost any meal, from hearty soups to festive holiday dinners. They’re buttery, golden on the outside, and pillowy on the inside. Here's a simple and delicious dinner roll recipe you can make at home.

Ingredients:

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)

2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast

¼ cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup warm milk (about 110°F or 43°C)

¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

1 large egg

2 tablespoons butter (for brushing)

Instructions:

1. Activate the yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and the yeast. Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This shows that the yeast is active and ready to work.

2. Make the dough

In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and salt. Pour in the frothy yeast mixture, the melted butter, and the egg. Mix everything together with a wooden spoon or dough hook until a dough forms.

3. Knead the dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead it for about 8–10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. If using a stand mixer, knead with a dough hook for about 5–7 minutes.

4. First rise

Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.

5. Shape the rolls

Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide it into 12–16 equal portions, depending on the size of rolls you want. Roll each portion into a smooth ball and place them in a greased baking dish or on a lined baking tray, spacing them slightly apart.

6. Second rise

Cover the rolls again and let them rise for 30–45 minutes, or until they puff up and nearly double in size.

7. Bake

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Once the rolls are ready, bake them for 15–20 minutes, or until they turn golden brown on top.

8. Butter and serve

Remove the rolls from the oven and brush them immediately with melted butter for a glossy finish and extra flavor. Let them cool slightly before serving.

Tips:

You can add herbs like rosemary or garlic to the dough for extra flavor.

These rolls can be made ahead of time. After shaping, refrigerate them overnight, and let them rise before baking the next day.

They also freeze well—just reheat in the oven before serving.

Dinner rolls are a warm, comforting addition to any meal. Whether it’s a special occasion or a weeknight dinner, these homemade rolls will always impress your family and guests with their irresistible softness and rich, buttery taste.
