Honey Chilli Potato is a popular Indo-Chinese appetizer known for its crispy texture, sweet and spicy flavor, and visually appealing presentation. It is a favorite among both kids and adults and is commonly served at restaurants, parties, and gatherings. This dish combines the crunchiness of deep-fried potato fingers with a flavorful sauce made from honey, chili, and soy sauce, resulting in a mouth-watering delicacy that is hard to resist.

Ingredients:

To prepare Honey Chilli Potatoes, you will need the following ingredients:

3 large potatoes (peeled and cut into finger-sized sticks)

3 tablespoons cornflour

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (maida)

Salt to taste

Oil for deep frying

1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic

1 tablespoon finely chopped ginger

1 green chili (slit or finely chopped)

1 small onion (sliced, optional)

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon red chili sauce

1 tablespoon tomato ketchup

1½ tablespoons honey

1 teaspoon vinegar

1 teaspoon sesame seeds (for garnish)

Spring onions or coriander leaves (for garnish)

Instructions:

Preparing the Potatoes:

Wash and peel the potatoes, then cut them into thin finger-sized sticks. Soak them in cold water for about 15 minutes to remove excess starch, which helps in making them crispier. Drain and pat them dry with a clean towel.

Coating and Frying:

In a mixing bowl, combine cornflour, all-purpose flour, and a pinch of salt. Add the dried potato sticks to this mixture and coat them evenly. Heat oil in a deep frying pan and fry the coated potatoes in batches until golden brown and crispy. Remove and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. For extra crispiness, you can double fry them.

Making the Sauce:

In a separate pan, heat 1-2 tablespoons of oil. Add chopped garlic, ginger, and green chili. Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant. Optionally, add sliced onions and sauté for a minute. Now add soy sauce, red chili sauce, tomato ketchup, vinegar, and a pinch of salt. Stir the mixture and let it cook for a minute.

Adding Honey:

Reduce the heat to low and add honey to the sauce. Mix well until everything blends into a smooth, glossy glaze.

Tossing the Potatoes:

Add the crispy fried potato fingers into the prepared sauce and toss them quickly so that the sauce coats the potatoes evenly. Do this step on low heat to prevent the sauce from burning or thickening too much.

Garnishing and Serving:

Turn off the heat and garnish with toasted sesame seeds and chopped spring onions or coriander leaves. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.

Conclusion:

Honey Chilli Potato is a vibrant and flavorful dish that is perfect for those who enjoy a blend of sweet and spicy flavors. It is easy to make at home with minimal ingredients and is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Serve it as a starter or a side dish with fried rice or noodles for a complete Indo-Chinese meal.
